Other than weeds and diseases, lawns are inhabited by several insects, animals, and some rather unusual critters.  This page is dedicated to those unfriendly varieties that may damage our hard work. This year, in particular, we have come across moles, voles, grub worms, crayfish (crawdads), fire ants, fleas, ticks and locusts (cicadas).

     The next topic of interest this year...crayfish or crawdads. Yes, we have found them in our lawns.      Moles are still the most common pests in the area. Moles are small but destructive, according to Lucy Moreland, a 4-H natural resource instructor for the Cooperative Extension  Service, University of Arkansas.  The six-inch long fur-covered mammal weighs about  four ounces, but it can destroy a perfectly groomed lawn.
